This is what counts as "dialing it back a notch" for Trump

The Guardian - Trump calls Obama the founder of ISIS. Well, at least he didn't call for the assassination of a presidential candidate, or urge a foreign adversary to commit campaign-related espionage, or spit in the face of the family of a soldier who gave his life for the country, or get sued over allegations of repeatedly raping an underage girl, so I guess this is what counts as a "pivot":
Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric against Barack Obama on Wednesday, dubbing the US president as the “founder of Isis”.

The Republican presidential nominee’s comments, made at a rally in Sunrise, Florida, came as Trump continued to face a backlash for hinting a day earlier that his opponent, Hillary Clinton, be assassinated by gun rights supporters.

“Isis is honoring President Obama,” Trump said of Islamic State. “He is the founder of Isis. He founded Isis. And, I would say the co-founder would be crooked Hillary Clinton.”

Trump’s declaration echoed an attack he made against Clinton last week, also in Florida, in which he said the former secretary of state “should get an award from them as the founder of Isis”.
I see. Hm. Because Obama and Clinton did what, now?
The origins of Isis trace back to the aftermath of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.
I see. So Obama founded ISIS when he was an Illinois state senator and chair of the Illinois senate's Health and Human Services Committee?

Or maybe he founded ISIS in 2005-2008 when he was a US Senator?

Either case, he musta had a busy schedule.

Please, do continue:
But Trump has routinely gone a step further by stating directly that Obama is sympathetic to terrorists.

The former reality TV star employed the same tactic on Wednesday, referring to the president by his full name – Barack Hussein Obama – and repeating it several times for emphasis of his claim that Obama had founded Isis.
That's actually no big deal. The neo-Nazi Republicunts have been calling the president "Barack HUSSEIN Obama" for eight fucking years now. So this bullshit from Trump is actually bog-standard Republican party policy. We should be thankful he's finally taking race-hate pointers from Reince Preibus.
Trump has not articulated a clear strategy against Isis,
Correction: Trump hasn't articulated anything, full stop.
